Neat accessory for FT-817 (3D printing required)

Found this accessory by German ham DH1ND on Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2062018. It is a way to modify a Baofeng speaker-mic to use it with a Yaesu FT-817. Seems like it would be practical for backpacking, since you wouldn't have to worry about running an external speaker or headphones while using the radio in a backpack/manpack mode (the radio's built-in speaker would be a bit difficult to hear while the radio was in a pack).

Neat trick. One way to reduce current draw on receive is to use earbuds instead of the speaker. Not sure how this mod would affect current draw.

I would guess that, since the speaker mics were originally made for HT's with small battery packs, which might be used for hours without recharging (police use similar setups), the current draw shouldn't be all that much.

I built my printer from scratch, but you might check your local library, or even a local high school or college. Our town's library has two 3D printers and will print things for a small fee based on the amount of material used.
