This is not technically accurate. By itself, the fan will perform equally in both cases. What often makes the difference in applications is not understanding the ducting effect on the entrance to the fan.

It is also worth noting that the rated fan CFM is the free air volume. Once installed in an actual application, a lower CFM will be realized.
