At the top rear of the radio is what appears to be a loop for a lanyard. Can anyone tell me if that is indeed what it is for? Presumably to be able to wear the radio around one's neck?

most stuff like flashlights, cameras, radios come with a lanyard for your  wrist so you dont drop it. or to let go to write etc and not have to put it down.

I too, just recently acquired a VX-8DR.  A wrist strap is not supplied in the box, nor is one pictured as an available accessory in the manual.
That being said... I think the narrow "string" of a wrist strap could easily be routed through that detent.
