I'll second that. The Mini-Whip is an interesting antenna. Just install it as per instructions, and ignore the criticisms.

I bought mine on eBay assembled. If you go this route, make sure to get the model with the isolation transformer in the power feed unit.

Not much of an improvement over a random wire above 16MHz, but very good below 16 MHz.

Its easy enough to make one yourself.

If you start with antenna thats too small you will always be hearing the noise floor of the preamp and not get  a good signal to noise ration. Thats essentially the problem with most small active antennas. Bump up the antenna size   you do get a better signal to noise ration with all the benefits of the active designs.
