If I understand the vanity call deal correctly, you sort of "rent" the call for the license period and if at renewal you don't wish to pony up the extra money you will be renewed as your original call...is this close to right?

From my understanding, if you do not want to pay the money again and keep your vanity call, you will get issued a new sequential call relative to your license class.  The only way you would be able to get your old call back would be to apply for it under the vanity call system.  That is only if no one has already picked it up.

This is just the way I have understood the system.  Since the vanity call system is less than 10 years old, I guess we will find out for sure in a few more years.

Yes, if you choose not to pay for the vanity call, you will be reissued a call appropriate to your license class.
