Last year I tried several times to get them to
respond to my request to buy an amp. I gave up
and will never buy one because if you can't get them
to respond to buy an amp, imagine what your chances
are in getting one fixed.
And they say in their manual to send the amp back to
get a tube replaced, probably the last time you will
ever see your amp.

What makes me wonder is why would any one buy a new amp that uses the 4CX800A (GU74B) Tube. Have you tried to find a 4CX800A (GU74B) tube?

This is why Alpha dropped the 8100 with the 4CX800A7’s and came out with the Alpha 8410 with 4CX1000A’s.
Also I would expect ACOM is having a hard time selling amplifiers in America with the dollar much lower against the Euro. ACOM did not set up at Dayton this year.
Who knows, maybe Ameritron could be the most bought amplifier in Europe.

Well 8877 be a good choice 3CX800 is another fine one.
what about 3-500ZG tubes is another one. As far as ALC well i dont thing you need to use it. Heck i run Ten-Tec Radios and there even a place on that radio to plug in a ALC line from a amp on. I never had a problem either using a amp with out ALC.

Three months ago I e-mailed the ACOM USA dealer for a quote on a 2000A. They e-mailed me right back. For several reasons, #1 was the tubes, #2 was customer support down the road, I backed off on the idea. I bought a Alpha 87A. It was sent to Alpha for checkout and shipped from them directly to me. They answer the phone! No question about their customer support, it is great.
I wanted a tube auto tune amp, I am real happy with it so far. Legal limit with plenty of head room. They pop up for sale ever once in a while.

The Alpha 87A will range from $3600 to $5600 depending on age, tube output and general condition and a bit higher for the Omega model. Now for the good news.
Alpha will check out the amplifier from your potential seller and go through the amplifier and certify it to be in very good condition. The price for this service used to be under $300 but you might want to call Molly at Alpha for a current price.
If the seller is not amiable to have the amplifier looked at by Alpha I would walk away from the deal.

I guess all the new tubes are for the Russian military only. As for buying the 4CX800a7’s try buying 300 tubes and see what they say. The USA manufactures have and they are told production is on hold to commercial manufactures. This is why Alpha no longer uses the 4CX800A7's on their production amplifiers. TenTec, QRO no longer have much stock in the tubes as well. ACOM didn’t show up at Dayton this year. Penta Labs does not make the tubes and there is no Chinese source I am aware of. As for delivering stock, what they are delivering are not recently manufactured tubes but NOS (New Old Stock) manufactured in the late 1990’s. No manufacture in their right mind would build a product which is dependent on a component which has no on going commercial source. |
