Hi,

New to SW. I want to buy a starter radio, but something good as well. Portable, if possible, but if I can't get what I want in a portable, I will get a desktop unit.

I mainly am interested in Ham broadcasts, and yes, I want to hear Art Bell on 80 meter!

So, can anyone suggest what I should buy? Please suggest a desktop and a portable unit.

Thanks!

I should say I am only looking to a reciever at this time. But, if there is a good transceiver for a starter, then I would consider it as well if not too costly.

I have been amazed by the little Degen DE1103 I just bought on eBay....~$65 shipped.  Seller liypn  It does SSB so ham transmissions can be heard.  Nice little unit and can be read about in the eham reviews section for receivers...which is a good place to begin your search.

If you can still find one, get a Sony 2010. It's one of the best portable units out there.
