I saw that segment on TV. It's been known for years that some types of cancerous tissues accumulate higher-than-average levels of certain elements (rubidium, strontium-90, etc), and tests were developed to isolate and treat them. A few years ago, some immunologists were playing around with iodine-131, trying to attach it to monoclonal antibodies which would home in on cancer cells and kill them.
