MAXON SM-4150 as 2 meter VHF mobile

Hi all,

I got one MAXON SM-4150 and want to use it as a mobile two meter radio . Is it possible?

You can't with out modifying the radio. The lowest you can program the radio is 151.000 MHz. It has been done, but requires a lot of work. What's more, it's only 12 channels. For the same money one of these costs used, you can buy a decent 2 meter amateur transceiver with a lot of bells and whistles, and ALL the 2 meter frequencies.

I had a GE Monogram (which was a 4150-EX labelled for General Electric) that was 16 channels and worked just fine in the 2 meter band. Had to retune the front end a little to peak the sensitivity, but that was it.

It depends on the band-split that you have.

The M model (M: 153 193 331I, 150-165MHZ) will do 2 meter just fine, (I have four of them in 2 meter service). But as already posted, an RX alignment may be necessary for best sensitivity.

The H model (H: 153 193 492I, 160-174 MHZ) will not do 2 meter without modification.

I just aquired 5 of these as trade ins because commercial users cannot use these after feb 2013.  My software will program these down to 144mhz and I have tried 5 and all but 1 worked.  I have not checked rx sensitivity but all made at least the rated 40 watts out.  wb5oxq
