Has anyone out there ever used the VX-5R with an external dc power supply?
Does the E-CD-5B car adapter support the radio on full transmit power?

I believe the manual states that it only works on receive when being supplied with power via the charging connector.

Hi:

That's kind of why I'm asking, actually. If you are referring the comment on pg 11 of the handbook, I think this relates to using the  NC-72 charger only. I can't handle the 2A needed for full power TX.

On pg 1, it says "when 13.8V DC power is suplied from an externalpower source, power output is five watts on all bands".

I just want to be sure this is legit and others have tried it before I cook the radio....

I have used my VX-5R with external 12VDC (using the Yaesu cigarette-lighter adapter cord) and it works fine, including a full five watts on transmit. The supplied wall-wart charger can't provide sufficient current for transmit, but if you provide external 12VDC with sufficient current capability, it will work fine.
