OK, good for a laugh, but it raises an interesting point. Why in the USA do you need so many different grades of ham radio license?

Here in our neck of the woods we have two, novice and a full license, and most novices go for the full ticket as soon as possible.

The original concept was an incentive to continue learning and upgrading your license. The payoff was additional frequencies to use. In recent years the FCC has been going in the opposite direction by reducing the number of license classes in order to reduce the administrative burden.
