Others here have mentioned the possible "distraction factor" of QSK. Something that has happened to me a few times over the years in using QSK:

I'm in a QSO. I start sending. But I hear somebody else between dits and dahs. So I stop. The other guy stops. Then I start again. The other guy starts again. His sound is usually not crystal-clear, there's often a flutter kind of characteristic of unusual propogation conditions. Drives me nuts. Who is this G**D*** QRM'er and why is he apeing me?
And to make it worse... he's zero-beating me!!!!

Then I figure out... that QRM'er is ME. Some sort of delayed echo has come up. What I'm hearing is in fact me, somehow reflected and refracted by the ionosphere and coming back at me.

I read about delayed echoes maybe once or twice a year in QST. Having been on the band for decades... tens of thousands of QSO's... only heard this effect a couple of times. But it is real!

I think it takes about 137 ms for a signal to go around the world.  You are probably hearing your signal going around the world.  I hear it on other signals often.

Here are some examples:

You are most likely hearing yourself on long path. Not really an LDE.

Had that happen to me a while back for the first time in 13 years! I first thought someone was intentionally QRMing me and then realized it was ME!
Sounded real watery sounding like it was under water, weird!
