I have just changed over to LINUX OS {UBUNTU 7.10} andu would like to start collecting and using amateur radio software. All types of applications i.e. rig control, contesting, APRS, etc. Any information as to where to look for LINUX compatable software would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Ubuntu is a debian based distro.  As such, you have all the debian repositories at your disposal.  Go into the package install tool (Synaptic I think) and search for the amateur radio software in the repository.  There will be a bunch of stuff there.  Try that stuff first, since it will install without breaking your distro and you will not need to compile and install it from scratch.

After you get more experience with Linux and hamradio, you can go farther afield.

A slick live CD ham radio distro can be found by searching for fldigi.  But it relies on Puppy linux to run.

Puppy Linux with fldigi can be downloaded here -

http://www.w1hkj.com/

You want "EMCPUP 3.01". Burn the iso image.

Puppy will run from the CD or you can install it onto a 512 MB memory stick. In addition to some Amateur software, Puppy includes all the goodies required to surf, e/mail, play movies and CDs. No need for a "modern" computer either - it will easily run on a 256 MB P-III.

Good Stuff.

I am running PCLinuxOS and installed Wine to run my Windows based software and I haven't had any problems so far.
