A question about internet links

Are internet links almost always underlined ? I am trying to make an internet link which is not underlined, I used to be able to do this, but despite my attempts I can't any more, and I'd like to.

Using Windows XP, Go to Tools, scroll down to options,, then to Advanced, scroll down to Browsing, then underline links, and then there is a choice, Always- Hover- Never, make your choice "never" then click apply, then OK, and exit.

Having checked "never", and clicked apply the link is still underlined, so what else do I need to do ? Surely I didn't dream having links which were not underlined. Your help greatly appreciated.

Which browser and version are you using? My Firefox does not read as you say.

I reproduced that in Internet Explorer 6.

From the tests I've done, I think the ONLY links that setting will affect are those where the webpage doesn't specify a style for the links.

For example, try your underline vs. not underline settings on this page:

http://wave.umd.edu/

On that page, the "Always/Never/Hover" setting actually works, but it doesn't work on more sophisticated pages with style specifications (which will be the majority these days)

If you really want ALL links to not be underlined, you have to override what the page is telling the browser to do.  The "Always/Never/Hover" setting, I believe, only changes what happens when the page does not give the browser any information on the appearance of links.  There are ways to do this... Firefox with the Greasemonkey extension can do that, I believe, but it will take some setup.

It's a choice of the website designer and set in the site's CSS.  it can be overridden in your user CSS.
