I took the plunge and bought an IC-80ad handheld and an ID- ???880h for the car.  Last tuesday I did the online registration with the local repeater/gateway group's web page.  The response said I would be notified by email when approved.  How long does this usually take?  This is day 4.  I'm not so much impatient as concerned that something got lost in the shuffle.  If this is an automated process, I would think that I would have been approved by now.  If it's a manual process, I certainly understand that it could take a while.  What should I expect?

Disregard.  I received an email this evening with the authorization.  It apparently is not automated, and the administrator has been out of town.

Another reason why I will never go D-Star. Besides being expensive and proprietary. I already have a license why should I have to "Register" to get on the air........

Registration os only needed to access the gateway  otherwise registration is not needed
for simplex or other dstar usage

It's really not a big deal, quite easy really. If you want to use D-Star just connect with club that's active on D-Star. For me, that was the PAPA System (CA), it was very easy to get set up. You only have to register once, and that lets you on any D-Star repeater on the planet. If you want to use it on other planets they may require you to register there....?

Also, you can use most any radio cable of a 9600 baud rate if you get a DV adapter, D-Star is actually not a closed proprietary system.
