if i move to a different part of the country can i get a new call sign?  do i have to get a vanity or do i have to upgrade to an extra?

You can keep the call you have or ask for a new, sequentially assigned call allowed for your license class (2X3 for General as all the 1X3s have been assigned). A vanity call is your choice but there is a fee for one of those. If you go for the Amateur Extra, you can get a sequential 2X2 call. The choice is yours!

If you were an Extra and asked for a new sequentially assigned call sign it would now be 2x2 w/ an AA to AL prefix, A General (or Tech) would now be 2x3 w/ a K prefix. A vanity (short money) opens up a number of possibilities, including 1x3's and W & N prefixes, and not necessarily w/ your new district number, should you desire a different number. Alternately you could keep your current call, while changing your principal address.
