Jackie,
Congrats on trying to get into CW.  I know how hard it can be with a hearing loss.  I tune up and down a little until the pitch is easier for me to copy.  (A rig with RIT and help with this.)
You know on 40 Meters 7.114-7.120 there are a lot of slower ops working away on CW.  I have talked to some ops only doing 4 wpm, which is really slow, and most are only doing 7-15wpm.  I found it is easier to learn if you get on the air and just chat with someone.  Nothing like a good ragchew to help you feel better about the hobby!
The SKCC and FISTS both use a SKED page which can help you setup QSO's with the other op already knowing that you will be going slow if you tell them in advance.  <www.obriensweb.com/sked>

I need to get my antenna up a little higher but you can always email me and I would be happy to setup a nice slow QSO whatever your speed.  Don't worry about going fast just do your best to make it clear and clean.  And above all else have fun!
73 and I hope to hear you on the air.
