Ham SWL speaker idea

I'm sure someone has said this before but since it didn't dawn on me until now I figured there might be at least one other person who hasn't figured it out.

The center channel speaker in a surround sound home theater system is optimized for human voice riange. There are hundreds to choose from ranging in price from $20 to $2,000. They look incredible and come in all sizes and some are even designed to be flush mounted into the wall. The common configuration is two midrange drivers with a tweeter in the middle.

What does it take to drive them...is an amplifier necessary?

Good question, I suppose if the impedance is close to 8 Ohms, you shouldn't need it for normal listening volume. But better yet, add something like this for around $30 just to look extra cool.

This is my current rig speaker. Works pretty good, looks great and has a built in 30 watt amplifier.

Check out Goodwill stores, recycle stores etc. I picked up a KLH center channel speaker for $6 that works great with an old scanner. I have not tried it on anything else. I think it's for a mid power home theater set up and the scanner has enough oomph to drive it without any problem and it sounds great.
