My wife and I are looking to move, and while neither of us want to move into a HOA situation, I am also worried about over restrictive towns/municipalities. We are looking to move to somewhere in Orange County, NY. Some  of the towns in this county have their zoning and building regulations available online to view. The trouble for me is I am not sure where exactly to look. My first thought would be the Zoning Laws, and so far I have not found anything restricting any towers, but nothing permitting them either. Or would they be in the building codes for the town?

Any point in the right direction is appreciated, and any info about Orange County, NY is also appreciated.

Thanks

John: It might be helpful to download the database on licences and sort it by state and then by city. You could then get in touch with those that live close to where you are looking and see what they have run into regarding restrictions. With more than 29,000 active tickets within New York state, there has to be at least a few within Orange County.

That is an option, but with several hundred in that county, it could take a while.....

Drive around the area where you'd consider buying, and look for antennas. If you see some, knock on the door and ask about the paperwork involved, or do a license lookup from the address and drop the ham a letter. You could also check Zip codes for areas where you'd consider locating, and do a license lookup that way...

Go to  http://www.City-Data.comĀ  and look up the town that you are interested in.  They usually give a listing of the registered amateur radio operators in that area, and you could contact them directly with your questions.  You may also want to go directly to the town's building department, and get some feedback regarding your future intentions.

I live in Ulster, next county up from Orange. You will not be bothered much if you stay away from gated communities. There is an incredible ham club there in Orange county which has 100's of members last I looked, plenty of room for antennas up here if you can afford the taxes, hi
Good luck,
