Was looking for a rx to listen to some FM programs, and SWL, and monitor some ham freqs around the shack.
I was considering the Realistic DX-390 / Sangean ATS-818 or the Realistic DX-440 / Sangean ATS-803a.

I think I would be disappointed in the audio of the smaller pocket rx's that seem prevalent now. I don't really get that smaller is better for my purpose. Any comparisons, ideas or other suggestions would be welcome by someone with some more experience.

Thanks,

Take a look at Tecsun 660 with DSP, cost around $90.00 to $124.00.

I didn't think the PL660 had DSP. I do like the layout of that rig and looks like alot of others do too. Its great that it has a BFO knob.

I have used the Realistic DX-390/Sangean ATS-818 for many years. It performs well on SW and the Ham Bands with it's ANT-60 portable reel wire antenna. However it is not so hot on FM/MW/LW!

The Kaito 1103 is my choice.

I've had a Radio Shack DX-398 for years and just got the Tecsun PL-660. Now prefer the Tecsun over the 398.

Picked up a Tecsun PL-600 at a radio rally the other day for $75. I was surprised at this cheap little radio's great sensitivity. On AM/FM BCB it's a joy to use. The 660 version with the sync detector looks even better. Definitely worth buying and great value for money! Wink

Realistic DX-394 was the last radio with knobs big enough to hold and switches you can operate without using a small stick to poke at them.
