OK check this out we are not crazy.. i went to my sisters house and ype.. her boyfriend has a tv in the garage. its a 32 inch crt type. its on a wall mount under the garage door track. when he opens the garage door and the top of the door comes up and over the tv, its sweeps across the screen like a magnet is interfering, turns purple and green.. what could be in the dor to be causing this he cant have the door open with the tv on its unviewable.the ONLY thing i come up with is there are magnets in the wheels with the ball bearings on the track.. is that something close.

Is he getting his signal over-the-air of by cable?

Any chances that the lead-in to the tv is getting pinched by the garage door?

no. its dish network, and clearly it is a sweeping magnetic effect like when you bring a magnet close to a tv screen it changes with the position of the magnet, same thing.. the more the door opens and starts to cross over the television, the more it crosses the screen from right to left, and door all the way open renders the tv nothing but purple and green like a monochrome kinda color.

Try degaussing the garage door with a degaussing coil? A tape head/bulk tape demagnetizer or large (transformer type) soldering gun will work.
Sweep the degausser across the door over the whole area and only cut the power when the coil is away from the sheetmetal.
If the CRT has a degausser, try it to make sure that it works. Many times a series thermistor will open and end the degaussing function.

Move the TV away from the garage door.

Some TVs degauss themselves when first turned on. Has he tried turning the TV off then back on after the garage door is open?

How about using a compass to look for magnetic fields?

How about a beautiful wooden door?

Things to look for:
1) A magnet on the edge of the door that is used to activate an alarm sensor mounted on the edge of the frame.

2) A magnet on the opener shuttle (the thing that runs along the track and pulls the door open) that activates a sensor on the track to signal the motor control when the door is fully open.

Also pull the emergency release cord and manually open the door to see how the TV is affected. That would ensure that it is something in the door and it would permit you to slowly position it to determine where the problem occurs. You could also run the motor without the door moving in order to see if it is related to the door or to the opener operation.
