PACKET Tm-d700 i need some help and info

OK so i have had my tm-d700 and got used to all the APRS features and functions, so i call myself familiar with APRS such as beaconing my position and tracking other stations by aprs.fi google maps, or whatever my radio can display.

Now isnt there some other features and such for using my laptop with my radio and my serial cable to connect to some sort of "BBS" or link with someone else using my internal modem in my radio? I have never played with any data modes on HF never have done RTTY or things like that. But i am confused. Is there a nationwide packet VHF fm frequency  like APRS uses, or does it go by region? could my area have no packet activity? I have a laptop and this excellent radio and antenna and amplifier, and rather than repeaters and simplex voice, i want to put this radio and laptop to full use. again, im not inquiring "how to use APRS" unless i AM confused and it does tie into the APRS frequency. I would really like to do some sort of " email " or "file transfer" or mapping on the go.. please help.. 73 to all....

Take a look at Outpost software.  It works very well with the tmd700... I know I own one and use the software....

Also try APRSISCE/32.  Runs on Windows, and is still under active development.

There are more active mailing lists out there for APRS also that are not on eHam.
