Side by side. As in running at the same time on one antenna switching from one radio to the other.

Christ, you're worse than an Apple fanboy when it comes to the Icom 7000. The Icom 7000 has a noisier receiver than the 480, get over it. Doesn't mean its a crap radio, just that there is more noise prevalent on weak SSB signals. It certainly doesn't affect the radio to the point people shouldn't buy it.
