I have taken on the task of wiring up a Signalink USB to a Kenwood TS-930S for a fellow amateur. Instead of reinventing the wheel i'm sure someone has this configuration in use. Taking a quick look at the radio, it's seems I need to wire the input audio into the mic connector on the front of the rig and pick up the phone output from the rear phone jack. Is there a fixed audio output on this radio? I'm not familiarly with this radio at all so any help would be appreciated.

Mike,

Hi Steve here. Sounds like you got your work cut out for you.
1st off I would avoid using the MIC Jack at all costs.
Unfortunately the Radio does not support a Data Port unlike the TS-940s and later.
It also does not have Fixed RX Audio!
Now the Radio will do AFSK Modes AND you might be able to utilize the In/Out Jacks on the rear of the Radio. Look at page 17 of the User Manual. You might try wiring the Signalink for these Jacks which look like they are RCA Jacks and then using the VOX mode for TX. Last Resort would be to use the 8pin Mic Jack. Unfortunately it does NOT have RX Audio on the Mic Jack. So its either Mic Jack or Phone Patch Jacks. I myself would go for the Phone Patch Jacks and use VOX for TX. But NO matter which way you go you are going to have to watch the  ALC level during TX. NO matter which way you go RX Audio and Mic Gain Control will effect the Signal quality. Sounds to me a better Radio is in order, IMHO! Anyway Mic Jack wiring:
Radio Mic Jack Pin#(s)
1 .......... Mic Audio (TX)
2 .......... PTT (STBY)
3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 No Connection (Note Pin 7 is noted as Mic Ground)
8 .......... Ground (STBY)

Signalink
RJ-45 Pin#(s)
Pin 1 – Mic Input
Pin 2 – PTT
Pin 3 – N/C
Pin 4 – N/C
Pin 5 – N/C
Pin 6 – Speaker (Use AUX Jack)
Pin 7 – Mic GND
Pin 8 – GND

Note: The Signalink USB has a Auxilary (AUX) (1/8" jack) (input from radio speaker jack if RX audio not available in data jack). So you might be able to use the Out Jack for RX Audio!

Anyway I have never done this before so check things out before you wire it up. I have been trying to find a decent User Manual for the Radio but no such luck but I have a PDF File of one that was hand scanned. Not very pretty but it works. If you dont have access to the Manual shoot me an Email and I will send it to you.
Good Luck!

Steve,

Thanks for the reply. I will pass this information on to my buddy. Your right, it seems like a new rig is order for him!

Hello Mike,

I have a TS-940 and have both a Signalink USB and a SL1.  My suggestion would be to fabricate cables to connect the Signalink to the phone patch RCA in/out jacks on the rear of the TS-930, and use vox to key the radio.
