I have an icom 718, which is similar to the 706 on HF.  I use a 250 Hz filter for CW.  For ragchewing, I zero the other op and turn on the filter.  For contesting, it's GREAT.  
In retrospect, I think a 400 hz filter is the best of both worlds.  Tight, but not too tight.  Anyway, a narrow filter will give that 706 a totally different feel.
