first you need the schemaitrc.  likley down load-able form several sites.
measure the   light source voltage after it  gets normal brightness.. write it down.

then measure the voltage at the  light source as you  power it up.
if it varies, chase it thru the schematic, untill you find the component that fails to supply  steady voltage.
replace said component.

this will take some   power up/ cool down  cycles  to chase...

C1 in the display unit has leaked and damaged the traces/thru-holes on the board. Remove the cap, clean up the leakage, and repair the damage. Then install another cap.

hi Malcolm,

Manuals are in pdf no cost at

http://www.radiomanual.info/KENWOOD.html

I have photos of the pc board and the location of
the electrolytic capacitor that causes the problem.

Also the location of the plated through hole that
I cleaned and used magnet wire to repair the connection.

Step 1) Remove the power cord from TS-50. Set TS-50 aside.
Step 2) Replace the TS-50 with a brand new Yaesu FTDX9000.
Step 3) Send the TS-50 to me Smiley I'll dispose of it and take care of associated disposal fees.

That should take care of the problem Smiley

Just kidding of course. Sounds like one of the replies may have it all lined out for you.

Good Luck.
