I saw that on the Drudge report yesterday and wondered the same thing.

From what I gather though, an actual new state is a long way off. But they've seemingly taken an important step which means it may happen sooner than later.

Is it kind of like what Somaliland, Northern Cyprus, the north part of Mali, parts of the Republic of Georgia, and probably a few other separatists movements have done?  Look how many of those are on the DXCC list.  Not to sound pessimistic, but I think lots of areas have non-binding or non-recognized votes for succession.  Puerto Rico just voted to become a state.  I wouldn't rush out buying new flags yet.

The key will be UN membership, which they may be able to get. This will make them a DXCC entity versus, say, Kosova.

From what I understand, Catalonia is pretty much already separate in spirit. They have their own language and customs. Some QSL cards I get even say "Catalunya" instead of Spain.

I live 35 miles from the Red River.  I will mount one of the first DXpeditions to Texas!  Wait, I guess they have enough resident hams. There goes my hope of going on a DXpedition.

UN membership is not absolutely essential. If the ITU assigns Catalonia prefix (as in the case of Palestine), then it shall count as a new entity for DXCC.

And since the ITU is an arm of the UN, the UN at least recognizing the state is essential.

So my point stands. (and this is why Kosova isn't yet a DXCC entity)
