Very Low Frequency radio fascinates me. It's likely too that U.S. hams will get an allocation around 500 kHz any day.
Meanwhile, Sweden's SAQ 17.2 KILO-Hertz station will fire up again briefly on Christmas eve. SAQ must be the ultimate steampunk-looking device:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alexanderson_Alternator.jpg"...the last transmitter in the world generating rf power without any electronic parts. No tubes, no semiconductors, only an engine driving an AC generator. Receiving Grimeton Radio (SAQ) on 17.2 kHz is as easy as the sketch below depicts.
You only need to connect an active antenna or some aerial wire to the sound card of your PC and to install SAQrx, a software defined VLF receiver by SM6LKM for the VLF band below 22 kHz." Has anyone played with this SDR? I just downloaded the files and they installed immediately on my computer which was already set up for a Flex-5000a. With my 192 KHz sound card I'm getting about a 100 kHz slice of VLF.
You can be listening to VLF within the hour, free.
