You don't say what your budget parameters are. One of the best investments I ever made was in a Grundig G5. Quite small, portable and sound that is almost unbelievable. No longer made but if you are lucky you might find a good used one.
If your budget allows Icom and Kenwood make a low price  HF transceiver that would work well depending on what your application is. Be sure you look at the product reviews here before you buy. Actual owner comments are your best source of info.

Be sure you read the negative reviews. It cracks me up when somebody gives a radio a "0" or "1" because they either: Bought a used one that has problems, or gripe about something unrelated to the *performance* of the radio, like its color.

Or they tried one in the store, bought it, and then gripe about the knobs and buttons being too small.

My advice:
DO NOT skip the portables and DO NOT get a desktop receiver.

The Tecsun PL660 is the best I have heard. Alternatively the Softrock RX Ensemble II is just fine.

You will be SO glad you did!
