Those were Spartans actually, Sparta was a sovereign City/State.
Though technically I guess you could call them Greeks,
at that point
Greece was not united under one government.
Spartans were Spartans first and Greeks second.
Sparta was a warrior culture of the first order. All boys
were taken from their families at about the age of ten
to start their military training, which was incredibly severe.
(Hence the origin of the adjective "spartan")
Spartan soldiers were the Delta Force or
Seal Team Six (DEVGRU SMU) of the ancient world.
No equal on the planet.
