There was a reason I said " very quick research" I didn't take time to make a thorough analysis. And I never said " Ham radio in space is dead" I said it isn't what it once was, and it isn't, even looking back only as far as the time after AO-40 died when I joined the ranks. I started this thread to ask about and then discuss the
current state of the satellite hobby. Notice I emphasized the word current. There is so much downright ancient information out there! AMSAT would do well just to get rid of some of that and provide more regular updates to the general ham public even if just to say " no news to report". I know the website got hacked and that's a bummer to have to deal with but I'd just like to be able to find more current reliable info on my own than what seems to be out there.
I managed enough hobby cash to buy one of the DVT dongles today and I'm going to play with it to see what can be done as a cheap SDR RX for sats. I wish I could afford a Funcube dongle pro but even that is out of my league right now. Anyway, I'll be trying to listen and maybe this old dude will be able to rid himself of some of this cynicism and be back with you guys at some point. I hope you'll have me. I apologize if my difference of opinion on some subjects regarding the sats rubbed anyone the wrong way. My intentions are always to promote discussion rather than dissent but it doesn't always work out that way. The best laid plans and all.....
73 and good luck,
Michael
