I purchased a 101e with matching speaker/phone patch. Does it serve any purpose these days? I was planing on just using a external speaker already in the shack,
unless it better or louder audio?

The 101E has its own internal speaker, but you can certainly use your favorite one already in the shack. You don't need the one with the phone patch. GL

Unless you are planning to make phone patches, use the speaker you prefer... there is no reason not to.  And you can determine what speaker sounds the best.

It is nice to have the matching accesories to any given rig.  If you don't plan on making any phone patches then don't connect a line to it just the speaker.  Nice to have but unless you are in to say the Maritime net you probably will never use the patch.  JMHO

Sure you can use any speaker you want.

A word of caution, though, don't throw out the yaesu speaker/phone patch, as at some time in future, resale price may be a bit higher because you have the matching accessory.  Collectors and others sometimes look for that kind of thing.
