Considering picking up a military AT-271/ PRC whip antenna for portable/ future base use with a ft-817 and antenna tuner.  Wanted to ask an see if that particular antenna would cover all hf bands fine with the tuner as is or is something better any one would recommend.   Budget is on the tight side so dont have alot to spend.

The easiest way would be to pickup a used ICOM AH4 antenna tuner, it would work very well with that antenna an tune 10-60m and with adding a little extra feed line do 75m as well if used in mobile application or as a ground mounted vertical with a few radials............KB6HRT

If you haven't already bought the 817, consider an Icom 703 with built-in antenna tuner. cheapest antenna for portable - a quarterwave wire and a similar counterpoise. Or go with an LNR EndFed no tuner needed - 3 bands for less than $100. Read the reviews on them!
