It's 8:30 PM in Rome and the Italians eat their last meal of the day very late. It's not like the US where we eat dinner at 5 or 6 PM. Additionally, he wasn't going to satisfy all that demand no matter how long he sat at the radio today.
Hopefully, he will operate until the end of the week but even if he does many will still need the Vatican in their logbooks.

WEll it's not like they have to set up a station every time, so there will be operation from HV. I'm not terribly worried.

. And probably some commemorative special event station for Frankie's ascension or promotion or whatever they call it (empopement?). Given he's 76 YO, who knows...they may be doing it all again sooner rather than later, too.

I finally broke through to HV mobile today at 1834Z. This was between the white smoke and the announcement of Francis I. HV0A shut down after the Pope was named. His signal was quite good here. S7-9 before he moved his antenna to SA. It dropped to S5. Then later when I got him S9 and bit stronger.
Francesco said " Beautiful mobile signal". It only took an hour and 15 minutes to break the pile.
Still a memorable QSO.

I wonder if a special QSL card will be offered to commemorate the election of the new pope?

There is not a swearing in later like with a US president. 73, Chris/NU1O

If they want new followers they need a much younger person in charge, Instead they picked someone from a growing region that just happens to be getting wealthier day by day.

I am sure I have them from the past but I tried today. With 700 watts and a 3 element yagi I could not bust that pileup. It would have been nice if he had called North America by numbers, 1-2-3 so on. But I guess that is how he wanted to work the pileup. I gave up and went up the band and chatted with a mobile from the UK.

I heard that, LOL. Nice job. There were so many callers that I never found his listening frequency. I wish I had a letter 'M' in my callsign. How does Whiskey Six Mobile X-Ray sound? 73, Jonathan W6MX

Actually you might be surprised on SSB how many times the other op misses the mobile designator.
Example, log search my call on tx5k. The good CW ops are likely to catch it.

At about 0000Z 3/15 I kept hearing a weak station sending "HV8E" but not cq. This was on 160m,1806. I was calling cq there then heard him with that call. He never answered me. When I looked up that call, nothing was shown. Another pirate? Heard that signal for a few hours after that.

HV8E is a fish beacon on 160m. It's not in the Vatican though...Do a web search using callsign and fish beacon and you will see it is commonly heard. There are lots of these beacons and sometimes they can be quite loud and a nuisance to DXing on 160m.
Last night there was a particularly annoying 4OUL fish net beacon on 1818 creating interference to TA2AL who had a pretty good CW signal during peaks in the QSB.
