How to properly solder a pl259

Sounds like you are talking about RG8X with an adaptor. Here is a link with text and photos that works. There are a lot of ways to do it. Some don't call for solder when using an adaptor with the pl259. I use this method only for indoor jumpers. I like to solder the outdoor coax. I bought several of these connectors, used 4 of them. They solder fine and seem to be well made.  I'm happy.  Chinese?  Not a clue.

Another beauty with Far Eastern origin connectors occurred some years ago. There was a load of N type plugs from the Far East which seemed cheap. Problem was that they had a metric thread.....

I had something similar happen to me Peter.  The very first silver/Teflon PL259 connectors I bought were more or less worthless.  The center conductor wouldn't go through the pin!
