SpotCollector, a component of the free-ware DXLab Suite, continuously monitors spots from up to 4 Telnet Clusters, a Packet Cluster, and the DX Summit web cluster to maintain a database in which each entry represents an active DX station. SpotCollector provides three independent views of these active DX stations:

  • - A tabular view, in which each active DX station’s font color indicates need (for DXCC, Marathon, or WAZ) and background color indicates participation in electronic QSLing (via LotW, eQSL.cc, or both)
  • - A map view, in which each active DX station, its spotting stations, and the short paths between them are plotted on the DXView or DX Atlas and Google Earth world maps
  • - A bandspread view, in which each active DX station whose frequency is near the transceiver’s current frequency is displayed with font and background colors like those in the tabular view

These views have enabled DXers to identify operating patterns in needed DX stations and visualize actual propagation band-by-band, thereby increasing the likelihood of finding such stations before they are spotted. They also enable DXers to rapidly QSY to a just-spotted DX station’s frequency and mode before the cluster hordes arrive.

To make it easier to determine where and when conditions might support contact with a needed DX station, I recently extended SpotCollector to provide a propagation view that displays the number of active DX stations spotted on a chart whose X axis is the time-of-day and whose Y axis is the band. This chart, for example, displays active DX stations spotted by stations within 500 miles of my QTH. A DXer seeking to work SV2ASP/A, for another example, might view all active DX stations in SV, LZ, Z3, ZA, TA1, and TA3 that were spotted by stations within 500 miles of the DXer’s QTH to produce a chart that shows where and when to look for Monk Apollo.

The DXLab Suite also includes PropView, a propagation component that can generate forecasts with its included IONCAP, VOACAP, and ICEPAC engines, and that can assess propagation by QSYing your transceiver to monitor a specified set of HF beacons in the NCDXF network.
