Thanks for the advice - yea I have some dollars to spend but I want to spend wisely. So far I haven't spent a lot to get going - the little Baofeng was something like $50, and then some coax and a little MFJ outside antenna. I just tested it a few hours ago and talked to a repeater across town and the guy said it was an excellent signal.
I'm not sure--I don't think they're made to stay in line. At least the ones that I've used don't. Once you set-up your antenna system and get it to it's optimum, there's no reason to keep it in line anyway. If there is a reason to check it again--like a meter on the rig showing abnormal readings, it's easy enough to re-hook it and re-check the system.
Yea I just read the manual of a Comet brand and it just connects up to the line and is removed after testing. Quite a neat device, but costs quite a bit at $440. There are cheaper ones though, I'll have to think about that.
