I thought of another one. A space blanket layed on the ground, you can use rocks or stakes to hold it in place, makes a great reflector for an improvised antenna. Oh, the slinky toy mentioned above has to be metal not a cheapo plastic on. Grin

1) Go to http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/crslist.asp and take IS-700a, IS-100b, IS-800b, & IS-200b (preferably in that order). You need to understand how emergencies are managed.

2) Don't deploy with "toys". Leave the QRP and experimental stuff at home. Get a good dual band mobile and antenna system and learn how to "use" it. I mean learn every function on the radio.

3) Study for and pass the General license exam.

4) Be a net control station, regularly.
