why, there is magic in the box, of course, and it will rub off on your fingers.

it's the nostalgia/dreamer market.  "when I was a kid, we were so poor I had to transmit with a catwhisker and galena connected to the ignition of a truck when nobody was looking, and NOW I can get my dream rig and build it.  FINALLY!"

and some people then never wake up and hit the can and go to work, but spend the rent money.

I guess the reason is there will be no more unbuilt Heathkits other than those still around.  There are people who like to collect unbuilt Heathkits and pay big bucks for them.

Take the unbuilt HW-101 in ebay for example.  It may go for $2000 in unbuilt condition.  I doubt if the successful bidder will built it.  If he did, he would have a rig worth maybe $300.

Ah....the old bid against yourself trick hoping that someone else (any sucker) will get excited and try to outbid you.  This is one of the oldest ebay tricks in the book.
