I picked up a Cushcraft A449-11S yagi on Friday.  According to the Cushcraft website and other places, it is rated for 440-450MHZ (the FM portion of the band).  They make the A430-11S for the SSB portion (430-440mhz).  I adjusted the gamma match on the yagi since it was out of adjustment for any portion of the band, and now it shows a 1:1 SWR across both the FM and SSB portions of the band.  So I wonder, how usable would it be on SSB? Is the gain and front to back likely to be really poor on 432 mhz?

If you optimize the antenna closer to 440 I'd not bother about performance. Use it for SSB, it will be fine.
