Looking to upgrade the mobile from a dual band to HF set up and have my eyes on either the Yaesu FT-857 or the kenwood TS-480.

Looking for general input any where from pros and cons to your 2 cents worth of a take...

Thanks  Smiley

I had an FT-857 for many years and upgraded to the TS-480HX (200 watts). I find the TS-480 is much easier to use because I don't have to go into the menus to do everything, 200 watts is very nice, and the noise blanker and CW filtering is better.

The 480 is a newer design; if the 857 is like my 897, the 480 is probably a better choice, UNLESS you want VHF/UHF in the same box.   I replaced my 706 with a 480 a few weeks ago and it has a few quirks I find annoying, but overall it's a good choice for a mobile HF rig.  Just MHO, of course.  73 GL!  --ken

TS480. Far better receiver which is way more quieter with better selectivity, far easier to see display, far easier to use, far better RX and TX audio, comes with the separation kit as standard.

Have you looked at the IC 7000?

I have an FT 857 in the car and another in the pick up truck.  I like them, especially when paired with the ATAS 120 antenna, auto tunes.
