The intermittent, and possibly the 10/15 meter VSWR, points to the band switch.

Have you ever adjusted the slugs? Is the swr any better on 17/12m?

Try another cable between the transceiver and AL-82 first.

Did you tune the amp into a dummy load?

What sort of power are you getting out of the AL-82?

You may have a bad tube. The input matching is designed to match with the pair of tubes. If one tube is bad, particularly if its dark, the impedance will increase by about 50%

TUBES LOOK FINE, AND YES HAVE A AMERITRON DL2K DUMMY LOAD I USE

One other thing to check is the T/R relay. Cleaning the contacts may solve your problem.

If the bandswitch is OK and if the input coils are adjusted for minimum SWR that still is not acceptable, and since you can get 1500W out and a 1:1 SWR with an external tuner between the rig and amp, there is only one other thing that can be causing the problem.  Either the coil itself (wiring or core) or one of the capacitors in the input circuit is / are bad or at least out of spec.

Did you buy and amp used?

I guess sometimes you just have to hear it twice before it sinks in.   Wink

I'm sorry, but I have to say it. What did I say earlier? Check the T/R relay
