Thanks for the info I have never heard of the problem with the potting glue.
I believe this one is good I am dealing with a friend, he has all sorts of stuff to sell because he is leaving the hobby. I will see if I can get a list of stuff or see if he wants to list it here. I will offer $200 for the radio if that seems fair to you all.
Google "TS-440 dots" and you'll see many discussions about the glue problem. In a nutshell, several components on the circuit board have a bonding glue to provide mechanical stability. Unfortunately, within a couple of decades the glue crystallizes and becomes conductive, making the transceiver non-functional. The most obvious symptom is that the LED display shows a series of dots instead of digits.
The glue can be removed but it takes quite a bit of work. If the current owner has done this and everything else is ok, it is probably a good one to buy. If the glue is still there but everything works, I'd buy it if it was under $300, price depending on condition and added options like crystal filters or MC-60 mic.
