I was reading an older post on eHam.net regarding the uses for an old analog scanner and one was to use it to receive APRS with the scanner and a laptop with software, but no details were given.

Can someone tell me the specifics of setting this up, i.e., cables/connections/software, etc.?

Thanks.

You will need an APRS client software and AGWPE, with a cable from the scanner to the sound card line in.

Thanks for the reply.  Can programs like Digipan be used without AGWPE?

"Can programs like Digipan be used without AGWPE?"

Yes, Digipan aond other sound card mode softwares are true sound card softwares.

The reason you need AGWPE for APRS or packet is it transforms the audio into and out of the sound card in to AX.25 packets.

FLDigi is a good software for sound card digital, as it has many modes in it.
MMSSTV is a good one to receive SSTV pictures.
