Hello All -
I have just ordered a Yaesu FT-60R HT and was wondering what recommendations I could get for a better antenna than the supplied ducky? I know about the Diamond SRH77CA but one of the eham reviews said that it does not work any better on 2 meters than the standard antenna. I also read about the Comet SMA-24 which has varied opinions. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check the thread in this forum entitled "HT Replacement Antenna".

Try an MFJ-1717S... cheap and effective.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't notice the other thread until after I posted this. The Smiley antenna sounds especially interesting.

I use a Diamond SRH77CA on my FT-60R and VX-1R. Very pleased with the performance.

I've had variants of the Diamond 77's for years, since the 80's I think for my first one.  I've used them on scanners and now ham transceivers and they are fantastic.  I use mine on a VX7R and on my Wouxun and have great results with both 2m and 440.

For improving the -2 to -3db stock duck, I have a few alternatives on the ANTENNAS page at ...

http://www.work-sat.com

The Diamond SHR=320A is a great antenna. Improved 2M and 440 performance on your FT-60R.

But for about thirty dollars LESS than that Diamond, we have the Smiley 270A. BETTER 2M performance than the $50 SHR-320A. And it is collapsible - so you only extend it as needed. A beefy spring in the based protects your HT's SMA connection.

The SMA-24 (and Pryme RD-98SMA) are also better performers than the stock duck. These "piano wire" antennas are great to coil up and transport in a Zip-Loc(tm) baggie - and carried in the glove compartment or in camping gear.

I have the SHR-320A on my TH-F6A and it works much better than the stock ant (which is good for OEM). I haven't tried it on my FT-60 yet. I have several of the VHF Smileys and they are great (also Lorrie is great to work with). I also have a Nogoya NA-771 that is better thaan stock, but not as good as the others I mentioned...K

Thanks to all for the replies. Clint, you have made me even more interested in the Smiley antenna. I like the price and the fact that it can be telescoped.

I have the FT-60R and both antennas: Diamond SRH77CA and MFJ-1717S.  I get better performance out of the MFJ.  Your mileage may vary.
