Title: HRO is a great dealer!
Post by: NG9Z on June 13, 2017, 08:09:18 AM
I had a very good experience with the HRO outlet in Milwaukee.  I ordered a SharkRF openspot for DSTAR from them just before the Dayton hamfest.  It was on sale for $20 off.  Unfortunately they sent all the units to Dayton, and they all were sold there.  Anyhow, the units were backordered.  After they came into the Delaware branch a few weeks later, the guys from Milwaukee had a unit shipped to me, and it arrived in 3 days!  Great service, helpful, and always friendly, no matter how often I called them!!

Yeah, what a difference their store is compared to AES.  AES was OK, but they made so little effort in the store displays, and you had to know what you wanted specifically, before going there.  Plus, it smelled like an old library.  HRO has given it a totally new, brighter refreshed look.

Given the choice on looks/image alone between "smell like an old library" vs "new, brighter refreshed look" I'll take the old smelly library.......in preference to the typical new, bright, refreshed, characterless, sanitised look that is more like an advert for Ikea.

You pays your money and makes your choice........

Obviously, you were never in the old AES Wickliffe store.

Didn't smell like an old library.  Did smell like an old A&P supermarket.

Never said it did......'MHZ did, better telling him.

For ham radio not keen on the new "bright & refreshed" characterless sanitised Ikea like stores.

I understand the reasoning - to keep the sheeple masses happy.......they tend to like that kind of thing, but then, most of them are mostly kind of predictable & characterless too.

I have not visited an HRO store in person yet, but dealing with HRO online is a pleasure.

You want customer service from HRO via phone?  Call HRO Atlanta and ask for David.  I have been buying from that fellow for 14 years.  He is honest, informed, a superb listener, and interested in customers being happy.  He's the guy I call when I call HRO.  I recently sold a TS570D on consignment through HRO Atlanta (coincidentally, that David helped me buy back in 2004).  One more excellent transaction.

HRO / Plano Texas....Clean, professional, and one particular sales person (WW9W) Robert, is fantastic...He owns most ham equipment at his house! Highly technical, and he is able to deep dive on the comparisons between rigs...That is a value add, which is highly appreciative to any Ham consumers

All good by me...!

It's hard to go wrong with HRO.  I have been dealing with them since they opened their Anaheim store in the 70's and they have always been a pleasure to do business with.  Great prices and great service.  I hope they stick around for a long time.

One really bad experience a few years back but overall a decent dealer.  We have so few choice as hams to purchase new equipment these days....

Few years ago I bought a brand new Yaesu VL-1000 Quadra solid state amplifier from HRO.
I was shocked to receive a used amplifier complete with layers of dust on the exhaust fans.
In all fairness, mistakes happen and the issue was rectified after finally talking to a manager after first initiating a hold with my credit card company.

There used to be an old, electronic surplus place in Lynn Mass called James Meshna.  They had one of everything that was for sale in giant piles in the front of the store.  You'd find what you wanted, hand it to the clerk, and he would head down into the warehouse / basement to get you one.  They had the coolest stuff you could ever imagine.

Anyway, one day I went to pick something up, found what I wanted in the pile, and handed it to the guy to get me one off the shelf.  After a five minute wait, he came back, tossed the item back on the pile and told me I'd have to return later.

When I asked him why, he told me that there was a monster rat standing in front of the rack holding my part, and he wasn't going to risk pissing him off.

I came back later when the rat wasn't in front of that particular rack.

AES could have been worse.

Perhaps they were just "burning it in" to make sure it was in good shape for you. ;)

HRO a great full service store.  I've had good experiences online and in person at the MKE location.

I had to chuckle about the AES "smelly old library!" comment.   When AES was on Fond Du Lac Av, now that was a smell, in a good way. Rows of new and used tube transmitters, receivers and accessories from Drake, Collins, Hallicrafters, Hammarlund, etc... !!! A true ham "smell" I will never forget.

The AES store in Orlando was always great.  Some of their staff (Eddie, Charity) are now working for HRO.

Regarding HRO, I have been to the stores in VA, Deleware, Georgia, Phoenix.  I have purchased from them since 1977 when I got my first used Viking Ranger transmitter and Moseley CM-1 receiver.

If you're buying HRO, call Atlanta, ask to speak with David.  The man is literally a natural customer service specialist.

I have been buying from HRO since about a years after they opened in Burlingame.  I have never had anything but great customer service from them and I can only imagine that if someone had a bad experience with them they must be a difficult person.  HRO didn't get to be the biggest ham dealer by not providing great service. :)

Was that the one at the train tracks? Didn't they convert the old train station? I bought a Regency Turbo Scan 800 from them way back in '87-I remember that place.

Your logic shows pure prejudice.

You base that statement on your experience alone therefore a distorted and very clueless Pollyanna mind set

Yeah, I think Bob bought a warehouse next to the rail station.  So I bought my Kenwood Twins from them just about a year later when they opened what is now the Anaheim store, it was in Fullerton at that time.  In all of these years of buying radios and accessories from them I had one problem that was resolved by a single phone call.  Like I said, you don't get to be that big unless you provide excellent customer service.

All the deadly dictators in history were big too, so big you bowed before them least they had your head.

HRO is not perfect, it's run by imperfect human beings. Some have very inflated egos.

Keep spewing how great they are and I will start naming the so called perfect leaders carrying their puffed out chests and then
the PC mods will shut down this thread.

By your twisted logic BIG equals integrity beyond reproach.

I have only kind words to describe HRO. The last rig a purchased, a Kenwood 590. Gigaparts gave me the most difficult time in taking my money. Rule after rule, after rule. Policy guidelines and needing to talk to the manager, owner, the owner's wife, children, chairman of the board, the governor of the state, etc. Mind you, I had already done business with the a bunch of timse. Got tired of the run around and called HRO and purchased my 590 on the spot. A few hours later Gigaparts called and told me that all was fine and they had gotten all the approvals up the chain of command. Told them my 590 was already on its way to me from HRO. So you snooze you lose and at the same time lost a loyal customer.

I was lucky never had trouble with Gigaparts in fact they were more than accommodating, the mirror image of HRO
