Title: Looking to buy a mobile rig
Post by: CMS239 on September 15, 2017, 02:47:01 AM
I have about £250 ($340) to spend on a VHF/UHF rig

It needs to be able to cover airband as well (108-118mHz)

I like the idea of being able to monitor 2 frequencies (2 receivers) at the same time.

My choice seems to be:
Yeasu 8900 (maybe a used 8800?)
Icom IC-2730D

Any advice please

I've settled on the 8900 for its ability to easily do packet radio (not fighting with all of the psudo packet / digital modes) It is one of the cheapest radios that has the raw 9600 discriminator output.
It's dependable, it has 2 rx, it can cross-band 10 - 2 and 6 - 2. The only downside is it may end up having limited parts availability at some point, and it doesn't have a blue display. Both issues I can live with.

I just need to find the cash.
