Title: Audio setting for Icom 706MKIIG
Post by: KR4GS on March 01, 2001, 04:12:19 AM
I just bought mine about two months ago and been getting great audio reports with the stock mic. I have the gain set to 5 and the
carrier set to -70 on another hams suggestion. It seems to be working great. I know that everyone's voice is different but just
wondering about other experiences. I use the radio mobile only. Does anyone own the Heil headset that was made for these
rigs? How about the setting for that mic? Opinions? Thanks 73' Tony kr4gs

I have been using the Heil headset with my 706 with about the same settings as you are using for the standard mike.  On the air reports from other station comparing the Heil and the standard mike showed the Heil to clearer and have more punch.  I use the Heil headset mobile and find it works great.  Not enough attenuation of the outside environment to interfere with safety but frees the hands up completely with superior audio.

I have my MkIIG mic gain set at 1 and the carrier offset at +120. It gives the radio plenty of audio with a little more "punch" on HF. I have found that setting the mic gain any higher than 1 or 2 while operating through some 2 meter repeaters resulted in clipping of the audio due to over-deviation. I also occasionally use the Heil HS706 headset. While I get good reports with the stock hand mic, the HS706 is vastly superior both on 2 meter FM and on HF sideband. I wish I could get that HS706 element in a DTMF hand mic. Email me and we can set up a sked in you want. kc5mfa@qsl.net 73!
