Title: Which antenna tuner do I want?
Post by: W5ZZG on February 15, 2004, 06:07:48 PM
I run up to 1000 watts and due to neighborhood restrictions, I have some pretty limited antenna options.  I tried the the LDG 1000 which worked pretty good except for 80M.  I would like to order a new tuner to give me a little more band width on 80 Meters.  The two tuners I am considering are the Palstar AT1KD and the Ten-tec 238B.  Are there any other tuners that are better that I should be considering?  I would like to keep this purchase under $500.

Thanks, Jim

Jim,

What antenna were you trying to load on 80m with the AT-1000?

I use one with my Butternut vertical and it gets a 1.3:1 or less match from 3300 KHz to 4300 KHz with no problem. Also matches the same antenna on 60m with no problem.

Lon, I have an Alpa Delta 80/40M flat top with loading coils. (65' OAL)  It works great on 40 but on 80 meters it only gives me about 75 KCs bandwidth before I start getting the "rapid meter bounce" routine.  I need the tuner for my amp but the internal tuner in my IC746pro handles the antenna just fine all the way from 4000 kc down to 3750 (@ less than 1.5 to 1)

Are you retuning on these wide shifts?

sure, I retune probably more than is needed.  (about every 50kc or as needed)

Then I guess I don't understand the problem. If you can retune then what's the problem?

No 80m antenna is going to have a bandwidth more than 75-100 KHz, and most not even that.

The problem is that with the at-1000 I can't tune above 3850 without the tuner going TANGO UNIFORM. (My antenna isn't the greatest) I need a tuner that is as capable as the tuner that is built into my rig so I can run my amp above 3850.

Never mind guys on the recomendations, I guess that wasn't clear on what I wanted.  After reading and re-reading the reviews, I believe I will spring for the palstar tomorrow.  The brand seems to be very highly reccomended.

Sorry, I have no idea what this means.

I use a dentron MT 2000 A and it tunes all, I also have a couple of icom AT 500 auto tuners which work , a couple of diawa and mfj dual cross needles at 300 watts.. but the big dentrons can handle it all (also look at the #k dentrons..  even the "super tuners will handle a kw

I just received my Palstar about 3 hours ago.  So far, I like this tuner very much.  I am currently in the process of double checking the meters for accuracy. I plan hook my amp to it tomorrow and see if it can handle a little power.
