Title: 6 Meter Question
Post by: AJ0HH on May 02, 2004, 01:44:12 PM
I have an ICOM 706 and am wanting to utilize my R7 as the antenna for 6 meters as it covers that frequency range.  My question is since the 6mtr/hf output on the radio is out of the same connector, can I run a jumper to the 6 meter tuner/swr and then out to the hf tuner and utilize the radio on hf as well as 6 meters, or do I need an hf/6mtr duplexer to go to the 6 meter swr/tuner and hf tuner, then through a switch or other unit back to the radio?

If you have a bypass switch (bypassing the tuning components of the 6 M tuner) in that tuner, you'll be O.K. running HF through it. If not, naturally the 6 meter tuner will have an effect on what you run
through it, that being the HF frequencies.

That's what I thought.  Thanks.

You didn't say what if any tuner you have now. I have this, which has a bypass feature:

Or, if you get a MFJ 949E (which I also have)it has a bypass option too, and have one coax going to your 6m tuner and the other (“Coax2”) for other antennas as the 949 has two SO 239’s. If you ever get a ladder/window/long wire feed antenna up, there are separate posts for that as well.
I have heard of folks using the 949 for tuning 6M as well?? Though a post out there and see what the others say.

A “D” with rear views

You can get a 949 D or E ( E is just newer but NOT much different) on eBay for about $50-$90.

The MFJ-945E (smaller tuner) does claim to work at HF *AND* 6m.  I don't know about the 949E.  I've never needed a tuner on 6m.  My beam is resonant.

BTW, 6m through a vertical is fine for band openings.  For local/regional (up to 300-400 miles away) you'll suffer 20db polarization loss on SSB/CW/digital.  A small beam or loop will do much, much, much better.
